| Make-Up Essay Opportunity for FULL Points -- (Rather than Docked Points) 1. Write and submit the original essay as it was assigned: 500+ words about a life-changing event with set-up, rising action, climax and denoument. Send it via email as a separate attachment (to meet the technology standard). MLA format is extra credit. We will learn MLA formatting more pointedly later on. In the meantime, to earn extra credit, simply follow the instructions here. SAMPLE OUTLINE (EACH SECTION MAY BE MORE THAN ONE PARAGRAPH): Set-Up/Exposition: Life right before the change starts to occur with lots of sensory detail Rising Action: Something small but significant happens to set the change in motion, like a phone call or knock on the door More Rising Action: The wheels of change are in increasing motion Climax: The complete change takes place Demouement: The aftermath where problems are resolved, figurative knots are untied, and new life sets in 2. Write a second essay according to the following prompt: 500+ words that is a compare/contrast essay where you compare or contrast yourself to a character in either lliterature or in pop culture. I recommend that your thesis is that you are mostly similar or mostly different than your chosen character, and then, as a counter-argument, later in the essay, discuss the opposite. SAMPLE OUTLINE: Paragraph I: Intro with thesis stating that for several reasons I am quite similar to Phoebe on Friends. Paragraph II: Way #1 that we are similar Paragraph III: Way #2 that we are similar Paragraph IV: Way #3 that we are similar Paragraph V: One way that we are different Paragraph VI: Conclusion, reminding the reader that despite that one difference, we are mostly similar.
