| Q1 CFA Grade 9 - J. Sahardian: 60% of my ninth graders got #22 incorrect. The question involves poetry and high-level vocabulary associated with poetry, so I will begin a poetry unit. Q1 CFA Grade 10 - A. Kittelson: 78 % of my tenth graders got #10 of the Entry-level exam (CFA #1) incorrect. It seems that they do not yet know which part of the story is the climax. To have the students use in a meaningful context terms such as climax, rising action, denouement, point of view, theme, protagonist, etc, and to understand fully what those terms mean, I will have them keep in their binders and use during novel groups (where they read and discuss grade-level novels) the three-page document entitled "How to Read a Narrative." VIDEO L. Sheridan: 37% of my sophomores do not recognize and understand the significance of various literary devices, including figurative language, imagery and allegory (R. 3.7) as is evidenced through questions 9 and 10 on our grade-level CFA, which was administered in September. As a class, all students maintain and expand a personal literary device log in class. Through direct instruction and group discussion, we identify literary devices in our reading and writing on a weekly basis, practice using the devices in our writing, and identify and cite the devices in our Response to Literature essays and in-class timed writes. Students also study alone and in small groups in preparation for a quarterly test on the literary devices learned to date. L. Panosian: Question 10 elicited the weakest performances in all of my tenth grade classes, whether regular or honors. I plan to use a graphic organizer for plot elements on which the students can map the sequence of plot stages to reinforce the concept of climax. |
