| Sight Words | |||
| "Sight" words are words that are immediately recognizable, without having to sound them out. Because, in the English language, the rules of pronunciation are complicated and often broken, it is wise to have a bank of words at the ready. Just as you know your name on sight, you should know a plethora of words on sight. I have compiled a primary list of words for students in grades 1 - 5 and a secondary, "advanced" list for students in grades 6 - 12. It is safe to assume that if you can read all these words quickly, then you can read almost anything. However, it is also important to note that decoding these words is just the first step. Saying words correctly is different from understanding what they mean. That second part of reading, often referred to as "comprehension" or "semantics" is also extremely important. So, go ahead and say these words, and then use each correctly in a sentence (or paragraph or story or dissertation). |
