Due Friday, October 3, 2008:

Complete and turn in via
turnitin.com a final draft of a literary response and analysis essay in response to Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. Make sure to discuss both the theme and the author's use of literary devices in support of that theme.

Submit your essay to
turnitincom by 7 AM, and bring to class a hard copy - in MLA format - so that two peers can evaluate your essay.

Use both this
outline and this menu of literary elements and devices to guide you.

Due Wednesday, October 8, 2008:

Cogitate on what you read today during novel groups AND dress for yearbook pictures!

Due Monday, October 13, 2008:

Make sure that at least one person from your novel group is designated to bring to class an appropriate
hat, costume piece or prop to wear and/or use during novel groups. The item must be apropos to the topic, setting or theme of the novel. If it is a hat, it may not be a modern hat that would violate the school policy, and it may not be worn outside of the classroom.

One purpose is to show that you understand the
theme and tone of your novel; another purpose is to entertain ourselves and any visitors who may enter the classroom:).

Due Wednesday, September 3, 2008:

Complete and bring to class this
personal survey.

Due Thursday, September 4, 2008:

Make sure to bring to class all
required supplies. If you feel inclined to bring extra supplies for those students who may have difficulty affording supplies, please do.

Due Friday, September 5, 2008:

Finish reading "Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" so that you may be prepared for tomorrow's activity and/or quiz.

To enhance your understanding of the story, use this
Reader's Companion.

Due Monday, September 8, 2008:

Define in your own words and provide examples for
point of view, theme, genre and irony.

For point of view, create short samples of each, much like I did in class. Yes, that means make up a few very short stories or excerpts of very short stories.

Due Tuesday, September 9, 2008:

Read for enjoyment. If you were absent any days last week or you were a late enrollee, then use this time to catch up.

Due Wednesday, September 10, 2008:

Define and provide examples for the following words:
alliteration, metaphor, symbolism and motif. Be sure to use your own words.

Due Thursday, September 11, 2008:

Define in your own words
allegory, parable, fable, moral and character arc.

Due Friday, September 12, 2008:

Read for enjoyment and be sure to have all
required supplies.

Due Monday, September 15, 2008:

Complete the Reader's Companion for "
Oscar and the Big Fish" and write a 700+-word essay stating the story's theme and analyzing the author's use of literary devices in support of that theme.

Use the
outline provided both here and in class and also the menu of literary elements and devices to guide you.

For examples of essays written in this format, see last year's
students newsletters and also the current anthology.

The draft you bring to class on Monday may be typed or written in longhand. If it is typed, I prefer that you use
MLA format. If it is handwritten, use pencil or black or blue ink.
